semen-analysis

What is a semen analysis?

A semen analysis is a simple, non-invasive test that assesses sperm count, motility (movement) and morphology (shape), along with volume and pH - usually the first step in evaluating male fertility.

OVERVIEW

What is a semen analysis?

It is a simple and non-invasive examination carried out to measure the amount of sperm, their motility, and their morphology amongst others like volume and pH levels. The examination entails obtaining a semen sample via ejaculation for analysis in the laboratory.

Step by step

How a semen analysis works

There are no treatment stages to move through - one short visit, and a report you will have explained to you.

01

How to prepare

Typically 2-5 days of abstinence. Avoid lubricants, which affect motility and morphology readings. Your centre will confirm the exact instructions.

02

Giving the sample

A private collection room at the centre. The sample must be collected at the laboratory - temperature change and delay in transit alter the parameters.

Important to know

Is a semen analysis right for you?

Semen analysis is recommended for men who wish to assess their fertility potential, especially when conception has not occurred after regular attempts. It’s especially relevant if:

You and your partner have been having difficulties conceiving after six months to one year of trying.
You have had previous conditions involving undescended testes, varicocele (swelling in the region of the testes), surgery on your genitals, or you have had an infection.
You are suffering from sexual dysfunction such as impotence and lack of ejaculation.
You intend to cryopreserve your sperm prior to any procedure.
You simply want a routine check of your reproductive health.

Important to know

A few things to keep in mind

What can affect your result

  • Using a lubricant during collection
  • Collecting at home and travelling to the laboratory
  • Too short or too long an abstinence period
  • Recent fever or illness within the past two to three months
  • A heavy period of alcohol, or significant sleep disruption

If any of these apply to you, please let our team know.

What the report tells you

  • Sperm count - concentration per millilitre
  • Motility - the proportion moving, and how well
  • Morphology - the proportion normally shaped
  • Volume and pH of the sample
  • Comparison against WHO reference criteria

Sperm parameters can vary between samples, so one test may not tell the full story. Your doctor may recommend a repeat test for a clearer picture.
