One of the most common practical questions in IVF: can I maintain my work schedule? For most patients, the answer is yes — with some adjustments.
Stimulation injections take 2–5 minutes each evening and do not disrupt working hours. Monitoring appointments (every 2–3 days) are usually scheduled for early morning — many patients attend before work. Side effects (bloating, mild fatigue) rarely prevent functioning normally at a desk. If your job is physically demanding — frequent heavy lifting, prolonged standing — speak to your doctor, as some temporary restrictions may apply.
Egg retrieval requires light sedation — you cannot drive yourself home or work on that day. Most patients take the retrieval day and the day after off. After that, desk work resumes normally for most women. If retrieval falls mid-week, your employer need not know the reason — some patients use annual leave or frame it as a minor procedure.
Embryo transfer does not require sedation — you can go home within an hour and many patients return to desk work that afternoon. The two-week wait has no physical restrictions for most types of work. High-stress work environments are worth acknowledging with yourself — not because stress directly causes failure, but because managing anxiety during this period matters for your wellbeing.
Q: Do I have to tell my employer I am doing IVF?
A: No — it is entirely your private medical information. In India, there is no specific statutory IVF leave, though employers may grant medical leave if you choose to disclose. Many patients manage without disclosure.
